Foam concentrates for Aviation

Fire Extinguishing Agents for Aviation

Foam concentrates for aviation used by airport fire services, or for use in extinguishing systems e.g. at commercial airports, in hangars or on helidecks, must comply with the requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The products Dr. Sthamer foam concentrates that designed for the this aviation sector, i.e. :

Foam concentrates for aviation used by airport fire services:

Aqueous film-forming foam concentrates (AFFF)
STHAMEX® – AFFF 3% F-15 ICAO Level C
is our aqueous film forming foam concentrate, certified in accordance with annexe 14, ICAO level C. Its oustanding fire performance and excellent burn-back resistance exceeds ICAO level C requirements. It is suitable for use at large, category 8, 9 and 10 civil airports with increased risks from large aircrafts, as well as smaller airfields to maximise the use of limited foam stocks. The foam concentrate is admixed at 3% with all standard proportioning equipment or systems, and applied preferably as low expansion foam or non-aspirated foam solution. It is suitable for use in combination with foam compatible dry chemical powder. The aqueous film provides for a high level of burnback safety during rescue operations.

Application:
The particular design of STHAMEX®-AFFF ICAO C 3% F-15 allows for low expansion and semi-aspirated foam application using air crash tender mounted monitors or hand held equipment such as hollow stream nozzles or low expansion foam branch pipes.

Environmental compatibility:
STHAMEX® -AFFF foam concentrates are physiologically safe and 100% biodegradable when used as intended, with the exception of non-biodegradable C6 fluorinated components. Additional information can be found in the product and safety data sheets.

Alcohol-resistant fluorine-free foam concentrates
MOUSSOL® – FF (ICAO Level B)

is a fluorine-free, 100% bio-degradable, synthetic foam fire extinguishing concentrate, certified in accor dance withannexe 14, ICAO level B. Polymer film forming componentsprovide for high burn-back resistance of the foamat high temperatures. When used on alcohols, these components form a separating layer which provides for alcohol resistance of the foam. MOUSSOL®-FF 3/6 foam is appliedas low-expansion foam with an expansion factor of ≥ 5 or as medium expansion foam. CAFS application produced excellent fire extinguishing times. Where possible, pump supported induction of this pseudo-plastic product should be applied. Due to its complete bio-degradability, MOUSSOL®-FF 3/6 is also used for training and fighting of class A fires.

Application:
MOUSSOL-FF 3/6 F-5 low or medium expansion foam can be used for fighting kerosene fires with an induction rate of 3%. When applied with hollow stream nozzles the foam expansion ratio should be greater 4:1 to ensure a safe and swift fire fighting success. Furthermore, MOUSSOL-FF 3/6 F-5 is suitable for high expansion foam applications in aircraft hangars or similar and inaccessible collecting chambers (e.g. beneath landing platforms). At an induction rate of 6% MOUSSOL-FF 3/6 F-5 is resistant against alcohols and other foam destroying, flammable liquids. For fighting alcohol fires the foam must be applied as low expansion foam. Compressed airfoam system (CAFS) application produces a homogeneous foam blanket of fine bubbles and a very long throwing distance

STHAMEX AFFF 3% F-15 #4341
Mfg.: Dr. Sthamer – Hamburg

Description
STHAMEX AFFF 3% F-15 #4341 is a synthetic, aqueous film forming fire extinguishing foam concentrate, based on surface active agents.
Special surfactants, fluorinated components and freeze protection characterise the composition of this outstanding product.

Approval
♦ DIN EN 1568 Certificate No.: KB-290/14, Part 3 (Heptane): IB/IB, Part 1: Medium ex.—
♦ ICAO Airport Services Manual, Low expansion foam — Level B
♦ IMO MSC.1/Circ. 1312 non-polar (Heptane)

Properties
STHAMEX AFFF 3% F-15 #4341 forms foam very readily and is used for both low and medium expansion foam applications.
The film forming and re-ignition preventing ingredients of STHAMEX®-AFFF 3% F-15 #4341 provide for extremely fast and effective extinction especial-ly when used on class B fires.
The aqueous film formed out of the draining foam solution spreads extremely fast and enhances the flowing properties and burn-back resistance of the foam.
The extinction time is reduced considerably and the fire source cooled.
The aqueous film even extinguishes areas scarcely covered with foam and prevents re-igniting of areas, where the foam layer is ruptured.

The foam is stable and in combination with the aqueous film, it forms a lasting, gastight layer on flammable areas. Due to its high foam density a long throwing range can be achieved.
The foam is oleophobic, i.e. it does not pick up fuel and is therefore particularly suitable for “sub-surface” foam application.
On hydrocarbon products STHAMEX® AFFF 3% F-15 #4341 can be applied as non-aspirated, aqueous solution by means of e.g. water monitors, water sprinklers, deluge systems etc.
STHAMEX® AFFF 3% F-15 #4341 is not suitable for use on polar solvents, e.g. alcohols.
STHAMEX® AFFF 3% F-15 #4341 does not contain silicones.

Application:

  • Used at 3% concentration and applied with all standard low and medium expansion foam equipment and fixed foam installations especially for class B fires.
  • Can be applied using water monitors, water sprinklers or deluge systems.
  • Seawater, brackish water and treated industrial water do not affect the out-standing fire performance.
  • Used in petrochemical industries, on airports and in on-and offshore areas.
